Hip displaciaQ: I think my 60 pound 6 year old blue healer (looks like a spaniel) has hip displacia, although i haven't had him x-rayed. he runs like crazy outside, but sometimes when he gets up from a sitting position, he moans and yelps, favoring his right back leg/hip. i saw the treatment for this in one of the q&as, but wanted to know how a dog with hip displacia acts. thank you for this great service. A: He could act like your dog's or he could have a bunny hopping gait or stretch excessively in rear legs when getting up or acting real stiff or having trouble jumping up on couch or doign stairs, etc to name just a few
Frontline plusQ: I bought 6 pk feb 5, 2004. i don't see an expiration date on the package and wonder where the expiration date is located? can you check or can i check the lot number to see if it's an expired lot? the lot number in question is w22101 for dogs 22 # and i am not having the great results i have had before with this product. frontline plus. i did try to check frontline online and they don't seem to have the ability to check the lot numbers. i plan to start calling 800#s in the morning. i had wanted to buy sentinel from you as well for both my dogs but my vet would not give you the prescription. so i can't call my vet. please advise, should i use a second treatment? is it that it's a particularily bad tick season in atlanta? i have found many (6) ticks on my dogs in 2 days and they are big not small ticks, one engorged with blood to the size of almost as big as a pea and when i pulled it off the dog he bled quite a bit. hope you will be able to answer with some helpful information fairly soon. thank you charlotte A: The manufacturer does not place an expiration date on frontline plus. our supply is always fresh and we do not keep product on our shelves for any length of time. you also need to be aware that frontline plus will not prevent a tick from getting onto the pet.

Food allergy or something else?Q: About 9 months ago my male eskimo started to have rectal irritation (inflamation and mild bleeding/scabbing on anus) and frequent scooting. my vet confirmed that his anal glands were fine and said that irritation continued slightly into rectum. his thoughts at the time were that the irritation may be stress related due to his history of generalized anxiety and ocd, or that it may be a food allergy. in the last 9 months, my dogs anxiety issues have all but disappeared, yet he still suffers with this irritation. i changed his food from nutro natural choice to natural balance duck and potato. it has been nearly one month and i still don't notice a difference. in the mean time i keep the area clean after every trip outside and use small amt of a&d oint or triple abbt as recommended by vet. any ideas on what may be causing this irritation or any treatment suggestions? should i have him see a different vet? thank you for your time. A: You might want to get second opinion. also sometimes dogs get irritation back there from tapeworms so make sure you look closely for tape segments which can be easily treated. also could consider working with homeopathic vet www.theavh.org who would take different approach. many do phone consults

Blood in diarehaQ: My boston terrier is 9 months old and today she had diareah with bright blood in it she has had her 7-in1 shots, round worm gel and tape worm pill. she may have eaten some food thrown out that had chicken in it that may have been ruined. what should i do? she is eating drinking water and playing with my other dog. she also has been passing alot of gas the only thing i have changed is their bacon strips to meat tenders for dogs, their food is iams. A: I recommend having her checked by your veterinarian so the cause of the problem can be diagnosed and the appropriate treatment started.
Sick puppyQ: Such a pleasure to be able to ask a veterinarian for advice! i got a 10-week old puppy from a rescue as an "as-is" adoption, and he was very bony and his fur was in very bad shape and he had little bald spots on his back legs. i was told his previous owner did not feed him very much, and abused the entire litter to the point of all of them having submissive urination (which he is, thankfully, not doing as much). i was also told that he had recieved a de-wormer, (hartz brand) sold at a local publix. i checked every time he pooped, and about 3 days later i didn't see any worms any more. i have had him for about two weeks, and he has not gained any weight, his fur has not improved much, and his little bald spots are still there. he doesn't act sick, but i can tell something is wrong because he is so skinny still. he is a wonderful dog with a great disposition despite his rough start, and i am looking to train him as a therepy dog if i can take care of this problem. can you possibly help me find a solution to this problem, and a possible treatment cost? A: I would take him to vet for exam and stool check as i find these cheaper over the counter wormers dont work as well as ones vet have. you could try wormer known as nemex from 1800petmeds which is very effective for roundworms, hookworms. i would also consider supplmenting pup with prozyme to help digestion as well as feed natural diet like pet guard or natura brand foods

CoverageQ: Our vet informed us that he would give us a prescription for heartgard but wanted to warn us that if we buy it from him that if our dog gets heatworm and needs treatment that the people that produced his heartgard would pay for the diagnosis and treatment and that if we bought it over the internet that we would have to pay for treatment out of our own pocket. what's up with this? A: The manufacturers give the veterinarians a guarantee on the product. because we get our product from a distributor they don't offer that guarantee on the product we sell. for that reason we unconditionally guarantee all the products we sell. inother words you will have the same product guarantee from us that you would from your veterinarian, in fact, probably better.

Fleas & a baby at homeQ: I have 3 dogs with fleas, we have tried outdoor granules, carpet flea killer, baths, and flea control you put on the shoulders. one dog had the stuff licked off the first day. we can't seem to get rid of them. we also have a 7 month old baby in the house, that plays with the dogs (putting his mouth on them) what can we do? we are noticing bite marks on the baby. A: I would try a few doses of capstar from 1800petmeds for quick kill of adult fleas on pets. also use oral program to prevent further reproduction of adult fleas. also use good house treatment known as fleabusters which i find most successful for house. can find on line and very safe
