Flea & ticks deep in ear
Q: I have treated my dogs with frontline plus and they are still scraching at their ears. i have not been able to see any thing inside the ears. what can i use to treat fleas and ticks deep in the ear.
A: Fleas and ticks typically dont go deep in ears. your pet likely has seasonal inhalent allergies causing ear inflammation and he may need topical antibiotics from vet for treatment as well as oral meds like antihistamines to address allergies

Hip displacia
Q: I think my 60 pound 6 year old blue healer (looks like a spaniel) has hip displacia, although i haven't had him x-rayed. he runs like crazy outside, but sometimes when he gets up from a sitting position, he moans and yelps, favoring his right back leg/hip. i saw the treatment for this in one of the q&as, but wanted to know how a dog with hip displacia acts. thank you for this great service.
A: He could act like your dog's or he could have a bunny hopping gait or stretch excessively in rear legs when getting up or acting real stiff or having trouble jumping up on couch or doign stairs, etc to name just a few
On a kitten
Q: I found my new friend on my patio yesterday morning, she appears to be about 4 to 5 weeks old. i cleaned her up and found a tick, and also fleas. what can i give to her to control the fleas at her young age and to ensure that my home will be rid of them as well? most treatments require the pet to be over 12 wks old and i don't want to live through the summer with this problem. thanks bess
A: I would try avon skin so soft by diluting 1.5 ounces in 1 gallon of water and applying as leave on rinse/dip; ; greasy but effective.

Hyperthyroid - cat
Q: My male, neutered 18 yr.old cat has been diagnosed with hyperthroid. he was prescribed tapazole 5mg., 1 tablet 2xday. he reacted poorly to the medication: vomiting, not eating, listless. i gradually cut his dosage down until he received only 1/4 tablet once a day, but he still exhibited the above reac- tions. so i stopped the medication. he is still very slim, but eats. he now has nervous reflexes in his legs, and appears to be aging quickly. what can i do for him? thank you.
A: Other option of treatment is radioactive iodine which is quite effective and no side effects. if not available in your area, you may want to consider consultation with a holistic vet. check out|altvet med.com

Fleas & a baby at home
Q: I have 3 dogs with fleas, we have tried outdoor granules, carpet flea killer, baths, and flea control you put on the shoulders. one dog had the stuff licked off the first day. we can't seem to get rid of them. we also have a 7 month old baby in the house, that plays with the dogs (putting his mouth on them) what can we do? we are noticing bite marks on the baby.
A: I would try a few doses of capstar from 1800petmeds for quick kill of adult fleas on pets. also use oral program to prevent further reproduction of adult fleas. also use good house treatment known as fleabusters which i find most successful for house. can find on line and very safe
Shop for: 1800petmeds, capstar
Sick puppy
Q: Such a pleasure to be able to ask a veterinarian for advice! i got a 10-week old puppy from a rescue as an "as-is" adoption, and he was very bony and his fur was in very bad shape and he had little bald spots on his back legs. i was told his previous owner did not feed him very much, and abused the entire litter to the point of all of them having submissive urination (which he is, thankfully, not doing as much). i was also told that he had recieved a de-wormer, (hartz brand) sold at a local publix. i checked every time he pooped, and about 3 days later i didn't see any worms any more. i have had him for about two weeks, and he has not gained any weight, his fur has not improved much, and his little bald spots are still there. he doesn't act sick, but i can tell something is wrong because he is so skinny still. he is a wonderful dog with a great disposition despite his rough start, and i am looking to train him as a therepy dog if i can take care of this problem. can you possibly help me find a solution to this problem, and a possible treatment cost?
A: I would take him to vet for exam and stool check as i find these cheaper over the counter wormers dont work as well as ones vet have. you could try wormer known as nemex from 1800petmeds which is very effective for roundworms, hookworms. i would also consider supplmenting pup with prozyme to help digestion as well as feed natural diet like pet guard or natura brand foods

2 1/2 year old maltese dog
Q: My dog has a dry skin problem, i guess. i bought the oatmeal shampoo & conditioner from this company and it helped to begin with but now (during the winter months) it seems to make him itch more. i just noticed some white flakey patches on his stomach just the other day, coincidental to a bath the night before. what do i need to do to stop him from itching and to cure the patchy spots? thanks suzanne
A: Have him seen by your veterinarian. the cause of the itch needs to be identified so the appropriate treatment can be given.
