Lytic lesion in spine and torn ligament knee
Q: My dog came in from the yard limping and crying in pain 7 days ago. the first vet gave him rimadyl and suggested surgical repair. the pain med was not working and he began pacing day and night in pain. i saw a second vet and after blood work and x-rays, determined that there was a lytic lesion in one of the vertebrae which was either a tumor or and infection. she prescribed antibiotics, rimadyl, a nutritional supplement for the injured ligament and a tranquilizer to help him sleep. i medicated him as she prescribed, but he spent the entire night pacing and whimpering. suggestions? in the meantime, i will continue to observe and medicate as prescribed. it is saturday and the vet is not in the office.
A: Need definitive diagnosis of spinal lesion. see a vet neurologist who can do mri of area or csf tap for diagnosis so you can decide on best treatment rather than this shotgun approach
Shop for: rimadyl

Tape worm tabs
Q: I recently purchased a bottle of tape worm tabs (5 tablets) for my yorkie (about 6 pounds). based on weight, the label instructs to give 1 tablet. my question is, for how long? am i supposed to give a daily tablet until all is gone? please advise. thanks.
A: The treatment for tapeworms, as well as other intestinal worms involves an initial dose followed, after about 3 weeks, with a repeated dose. this will help in the complete eradication.

Fleas & a baby at home
Q: I have 3 dogs with fleas, we have tried outdoor granules, carpet flea killer, baths, and flea control you put on the shoulders. one dog had the stuff licked off the first day. we can't seem to get rid of them. we also have a 7 month old baby in the house, that plays with the dogs (putting his mouth on them) what can we do? we are noticing bite marks on the baby.
A: I would try a few doses of capstar from 1800petmeds for quick kill of adult fleas on pets. also use oral program to prevent further reproduction of adult fleas. also use good house treatment known as fleabusters which i find most successful for house. can find on line and very safe
Shop for: 1800petmeds, capstar

Heartworm treatment
Q: We have a 3 1/2 year old doberman and we found out that he has heartworms. the treatment is very expensive. is there a pill or other treatment options that are cheaper than taking him to the vet for 2 days and paying all that money. thank you.
A: The newer treatment is highly successful but there are still some rare severe side effects that can be seen. many dogs can live with heartworms for years. in fact some of the older dogs who we dont want to risk the treatment we will simply put on the monthly heartworm preventatives which tend not to cause problems(unlike the daily preventatives which should never be given to a heartworm positive dog) you may want to ask your vet about using the monthly preventative which can at least sterilize the adult worms that are present and prevent further proliferation of worms, but this should be done only under supervisioin of vet if you decide not to treat

16 yr old cat with fleas
Q: I have a cat that had kittens 7 weeks ago. she has brought in fleas not only to the kittens but to my 16 yr old male cat. what can i use for him that will be safe as well as for the kittens. what would be a good, safe remedy to use in the home to get rid of the fleas?
A: I like fleabusters for in home flea treatment. can find on line. in 1 week you can use front line or advantage on mother and kittens, however i would avoid all such chemicals in 16 year old cat. consider natural flea control such as avon skin so soft applied to him by diluting 1.5 ounces in 1 gallon of water and applying as leave on rinse or dip. also consider product called cloud 9 by halo which you can find in health food stores for senior cat
Shop for: advantage

Mixing oral & topical medications
Q: My dog presently uses "sentinel".is it ok to use a topical treatment, such as "frontline plus" or "advantage" along with "sentinel" ?
A: Not a good idea.
Shop for: sentinel, advantage, frontline plus, frontline
