Tapeworms in cats
Q: My cat is 9 months old, and is female. she just started to have a case of tapeworms, looks like white rice. what is the best medicine for her? what can i do?
A: She needs to be seen by your veterinarian and have a stool sample checked. your veterinarian can prescribe appropriate treatment for the parasites.

Heartworms
Q: My lab has heartworms. my vet says that an alternative treatment to the week stay at the vet is that we can use one of the heartworm preventors and it will help the existing worms die out and will not allow new worms to produce. do you agree with this form of treatment?
A: I usually recommend adulticide treatment with drug known as immiticide only available from your vet. monthly heartworm prevention will only prevent further reproduction but not kill existing adult heartworms

Mange?
Q: My bichon is 12 years old and has suffered from some skin problem for the past 3 years. there are sores (blackish) that dig deep into the skin and itch and bleed sometimes. they smell too. i have taken her to several vets and they can't seem to diagnose it. we have tried everything. i read sulphur might help. she has lost a lot of hair and has red areas all over her. can you help?
A: Tough for me to help in this short space here. you could consult with a vet dermatologist if you have not already done so. make sure vets have looked for a yeast known as malassezia which can sometimes complicate skin allergies, etc and needs special treatment. you could also look at alternative vets www.theavh.org.

Tape worm tabs
Q: I recently purchased a bottle of tape worm tabs (5 tablets) for my yorkie (about 6 pounds). based on weight, the label instructs to give 1 tablet. my question is, for how long? am i supposed to give a daily tablet until all is gone? please advise. thanks.
A: The treatment for tapeworms, as well as other intestinal worms involves an initial dose followed, after about 3 weeks, with a repeated dose. this will help in the complete eradication.
