Lytic lesion in spine and torn ligament knee
Q: My dog came in from the yard limping and crying in pain 7 days ago. the first vet gave him rimadyl and suggested surgical repair. the pain med was not working and he began pacing day and night in pain. i saw a second vet and after blood work and x-rays, determined that there was a lytic lesion in one of the vertebrae which was either a tumor or and infection. she prescribed antibiotics, rimadyl, a nutritional supplement for the injured ligament and a tranquilizer to help him sleep. i medicated him as she prescribed, but he spent the entire night pacing and whimpering. suggestions? in the meantime, i will continue to observe and medicate as prescribed. it is saturday and the vet is not in the office.
A: Need definitive diagnosis of spinal lesion. see a vet neurologist who can do mri of area or csf tap for diagnosis so you can decide on best treatment rather than this shotgun approach

Luxating patella?
Q: Dear dr., i have noticed that my cat is having problems walking on one of his hind legs. i realize that hind leg problems in cats are common but my concern is that my cat is only about a year old (according to the spca). i am worried that he may be too young to have arthritis and it may be something more serious like luxating patella? but i do not have the money for his possible surgery. i have also noticed that some cheaper forms of treatment may be cosequin or simply that he is just too heavy for his legs. in any case is feline cosequin something i can purchase through this website? does this website have diet food for cats? he is pretty heavy. your advice is greatly appreciated, as i find that everytime i take him to the vet , a simple diagnosis costs me about $200. i rather just by the meds through this site. thank you. - erin
A: You can try cosequin for cats from 1800petmeds without a prescription. "also consider taking him off dry food which is big source of carbohydrates and weight gain in many obese cats. consider all wet food or perhaps home made diet. also dont leave food down for him to nibble on throughout day but offer meals at set times a day. buy book the new natural cat by anitra frazier to see how cats should truly eat and i bet you see some nice changes

On a kitten
Q: I found my new friend on my patio yesterday morning, she appears to be about 4 to 5 weeks old. i cleaned her up and found a tick, and also fleas. what can i give to her to control the fleas at her young age and to ensure that my home will be rid of them as well? most treatments require the pet to be over 12 wks old and i don't want to live through the summer with this problem. thanks bess
A: I would try avon skin so soft by diluting 1.5 ounces in 1 gallon of water and applying as leave on rinse/dip; ; greasy but effective.

Westie paw infection/allergies
Q: My westie has continued problems with her paws. they become red and swollen around the nails and eventually become infected. my veterinarian has prescribed baytril and also tried zenequin(?) for her to take on a permanent basis. these will work for a few weeks or months, but eventually the paws begin to become inflamed again. are there any other medications or treatments that might work?
A: The antibiotics are only treating the secondary infections but not the primary cause. westies commonly have inhalent allergies to inhaled dust, mold, dander, etc. unlike us who get hay fever, dogs show their allergies often by intense feet licking. antihistamines and low doses of oral cortisone can often help, but if the problem keeps recurring you may want to have her allergy tested to see what she is allergic to, and then your vet can formulate an allergy vaccine to hopefully help desensitize her to these allergens.

Heartworms
Q: My lab has heartworms. my vet says that an alternative treatment to the week stay at the vet is that we can use one of the heartworm preventors and it will help the existing worms die out and will not allow new worms to produce. do you agree with this form of treatment?
A: I usually recommend adulticide treatment with drug known as immiticide only available from your vet. monthly heartworm prevention will only prevent further reproduction but not kill existing adult heartworms

2 1/2 year old maltese dog
Q: My dog has a dry skin problem, i guess. i bought the oatmeal shampoo & conditioner from this company and it helped to begin with but now (during the winter months) it seems to make him itch more. i just noticed some white flakey patches on his stomach just the other day, coincidental to a bath the night before. what do i need to do to stop him from itching and to cure the patchy spots? thanks suzanne
A: Have him seen by your veterinarian. the cause of the itch needs to be identified so the appropriate treatment can be given.

Tapeworms in cats
Q: My cat is 9 months old, and is female. she just started to have a case of tapeworms, looks like white rice. what is the best medicine for her? what can i do?
A: She needs to be seen by your veterinarian and have a stool sample checked. your veterinarian can prescribe appropriate treatment for the parasites.

Oral treatment
Q: I take care of my 1 yr old granddaughter and she likes to rub her face in my dogs fur. is there a pill that will take care of fleas and tick and heartworm? i'm afraid that the topical will hurt my granddaughter.
A: You can purchase a product called program from us. if you contact our customer service department, we will obtain a prescription for you. please let your veterinarian know about your change.
